Project Matters
The Sugarloaf Project is a long-term environmental initiative focused on conserving one of Ireland’s most iconic landscapes. Rather than creating a path for convenience, we’ve built it to protect the mountain — the path is a happy coincidence of sustainability. Through sensitive planning, restoration, and upland path building, the project reduces the spread of human impact, enhances biodiversity, and ensures this landscape can thrive for generations to come.
Techniques That
Respect the Land
To protect the Sugarloaf’s delicate environment, we’ve implemented a carefully selected range of upland path techniques, each tailored to suit the mountain’s natural terrain and ecology. From stone pitching on steep summit cones, which provides durable, natural-looking surfaces, to v-ditches that discreetly manage surface water, every method was chosen with both function and visual harmony in mind. Stone cross drains and waterbars help control water flow and reduce erosion, while braid blocking keeps foot traffic contained to minimise further landscape damage. Alongside this, upland path site restoration focuses on healing and rewilding overused ground. Each of these techniques has been applied with the utmost respect for the land, prioritising minimal visual impact and long-term resilience. Minimal Impact, Maximum Integrity
We’ve taken a zero-import approach — every boulder and stone used was sourced from the mountain itself, moved by hand with painstaking care. No industrial materials were brought in. Our goal is for the path to visually disappear into the mountain within 5–8 years. This careful construction process ensures the work is resilient, functional, and true to its surroundings.
A Future-Focused Vision
By funnelling footfall onto a well-constructed upland path, we’re dramatically reducing the amount of land impacted by recreational use. This concentrated footprint enables natural habitats to recover, leading to a long-term net gain in biodiversity. The next phase of the project will include the removal of invasive pine trees and the introduction of native planting, further enhancing the ecological resilience.

with Nature
The techniques deployed on the Sugarloaf were chosen not only for their durability, but for their ability to blend seamlessly with the mountain’s natural character. Every element—from the placement of stones to the contours of the path—was designed to sit quietly within the landscape, requiring minimal maintenance while supporting local biodiversity. This is a place rich with life: Wrens, Meadow Pipits, and Cuckoos nest and forage among the moorland, while Ling Heather, Bracken, and Gorse carpet the slopes in seasonal colour. By containing human impact to a single, well-crafted upland path, we’re helping to protect this delicate balance—allowing the mountain’s flora and fauna to continue thriving, undisturbed.
